Portugal is Home to The World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge
If you’re an adventurous person who happens to be in Portugal, then a trek across the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge provides the excitement and stimulation your adrenal glands crave.
The 516 Arouca bridge, in Arouca, in the Aveiro district on the west coast of Portugal, connects the banks of the Paiva River and spans 516 meters (1,693 feet ) and 175 (574 feet) meters in elevation.
The 516 Arouca took the title from the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge in Switzerland, which spans 494 meters (1,621) feet and opened in 2017.
Designed by the Portuguese studio Itecons, the bridge took three years to build and is located in the Geopark’s eastern region. Close to the Paiva Walkways, the towns of Alvarenga, Canelas, Espiunca and Areinho and Vau river beaches.
According to the bridge’s website, visitors will get a breathtaking view of Garganta do Paiva and Cascata das Aguieiras, both geosites of the UNESCO Arouca Geopark territory.
